Klungkung

Klungkung, Bali’s smallest district, is nestled between Karangasem and Gianyar. A bustling town, this is one of the central attractions on the island.

The district constitutes three distinct islands, namely Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembangon and Nusa Ceningan. Each of these islands has unique attractions that make the district a worthwhile travel destination. It is not uncommon to hear locals referring to the district as Semarapura.

The history of Klungkung can be traced back to the 17th century when the head of the empire relocated to the town. At the turn of the 20th century, the town was the site of ritual suicide in an attempt of the king to get freedom from Dutch colonialists. These events, while understandably grotesque, brought with them remarkable progress in terms of Bali’s cultural and art scene.

It is little wonder that many of the attractions revolve around nature, arts and culture. A good place to start your trip would be at Gunarsa Museum of Classical and Modern Art. The museum is the brainchild of Gunarsa Nyoman, Bali’s most popular artist. The museum is also home to artefacts inspired by Balinese culture.

Kamasan village is also an arts haven with many art exhibits on display. Proceed to River Unda where the kids can splash and have fun, ideal for a weekend getaway. It is also a central location for the locals, so the river presents a unique opportunity to get a glimpse into the local way of life. Let your trip culminate with a visit to Taman Gili where one can see the former home of the past royal family. The amazing ceiling at the Kerta Gosa pavilion depicts Bali’s classical history.

Guests usually opt to stay at neighbouring towns such as Candidasa and Padang Bai. A few choose to spend in the town at Klungkung tower Hotel, which has good accommodation, friendly staff and amazing views from the tower. Klungkung is a great location to sample Bali’s culture.
