Pura Ulun Siwi

Pura Ulun Siwi is a spectacular temple located in Jimbaran. The temple was constructed in the 18th century and has a rich history.

The location of the temple is right in the centre of town, but as this area in a mountainous area of Bali, it is a lot cooler which makes this a great place to visit on a typical hot Bali day.

Pura Ulun Siwi Temple Jimbaran Bali, Entry Fee & Dress Code

The temple is unique for a number of reasons: the first is that unlike other temples which are southward facing, Pura Ulun Siwi faces to the east. In addition to this, devout locals pray while facing the west as opposed to the north which is the case in traditional Balinese Hindu Temples. The reason for this is that the temple’s beginnings can be traced to its primitive beginnings in the early 11th century. Mpu Kuturan, the founder of Ulun Siwi, and a Javanese local followed his native traditions in building the temple.

Another unique fact about this temple is that it only has two courtyards as opposed to the three that are a characteristic of Balinese Hindu Temples. The inner courtyard is quite spacious and is home to the large 11-tiered pagoda. Several renovations have been carried out at the temple, yet this magnificent structure still retains its rustic appeal.

Look out for the gate that is made from coral stone and not the conventional brick. As one of the temples that is dedicated to rice farming as well as protecting the island from spirits, Pura Ulun Siwi makes for a refreshing travel destination for anyone who would like to enjoy the island’s treasures.

As with all temples, make sure to dress modestly. Visitors must ensure that they wear a sarong to cover knees and ankles and also make sure that shoulders and midriffs are covered. The entrance fee is around 20,000 IDR.
