Tanah Lot

Tanah Lot ranks as one of the most popular travel destinations on the island. The fusion of culture and ancient attractions makes it an exciting location.

Part of the town’s history is intertwined in one of the most remarkable landmarks on location, the Tanah Lot Temple. The temple is situated in Tabanan, just 12 miles away from Denpasar Airport.

History has it that the temple was built following the inspiration of the priest Nirartha way back in the 15th century. The priest, having spent time on the rock where the temple stands today, felt the need to build a shrine that will pay homage to the gods of the sea. He then guided the locals to construct a temple on the rock.

To get to the temple, you will walk through a number of stalls selling all kinds of food, drinks and souvenirs. Be prepared to haggle for souvenirs, as the prices are “tourist prices” and can often be negotiated down. The temple cannot be reached during high tide, which occurs during the morning and after sunrise. However, the best pictures occur in the morning where the temple is surrounded by the ocean, or at sunset as the sun drops down beyond the horizon.

Sunset Terrace is yet another famous attraction in Tanah Lot. The terrace offers panoramic views of the ocean. Pack a meal, and bond with your family as you overlook the horizon. There are a couple of stalls where you can get beverages. Make sure to get ‘Kelapa Muda’, the traditional beverage of fresh coconut water to rejuvenate you.

A trip to Tanah Lot is not complete until you have visited Enjung Galuh. Located to the west of the temple, Enjung Galuh offers an amazing location to watch as the sun sets. The perfect place to make great memories, this is a romantic getaway that is a favourite for both locals and foreigners. To get to this picturesque location, visitors use Jl. Raya Canggu, an hour’s drive from Denpasar.
