This water is drawn from a pond whose fresh springs are a great resource at the temple. In fact, the name of the temple, ‘Tirta Empul’ translates to Holy Spring in the local dialect.

The temple was built in 962AD and has three distinct sections: the front courtyard, middle courtyard and inner sanctuary, which is deemed to be the holiest of the three.

The central courtyard is home to two pools and more than two dozen showers. The left section of the temple features a contemporary house that was erected to cater for the then-president’s tour of the holy temple back in 1954. Today, the villa provides accommodation for visitors who would like to spend some time in the placid surroundings.

Some of the public facilities available at Tirta Empul Temple include ample parking space, food vendors, souvenir stalls as well as a money changer.

The entrance fee to the temple is around 15,000 IDR per person. Please ensure that you bring your own sarong to cover your knees and ankles. If you do not have one of your own, the locals will rent you one for free. Visitors should also ensure that they have their shoulders and midriffs covered when entering the temple.
